Seohae Gold Train: A Korean Rail Trip Beyond Seoul
Looking for a Korean rail experience beyond Seoul’s palace circuit? The Seohae Gold Train is worth researching for its ondol floor rooms and a route that includes Gunsan. The first thing to understand is the price: the room supplement and each person’s train fare are separate.
Official information checked September 20, 2026. This is a researched planning introduction, not a personal ride review.

A different way to enjoy the journey
The Korean train name is 서해금빛열차. Its floor room is called 온돌마루실 (ondol-maru-sil). Korail describes adjustable floor heating and backrests. Check the operator’s current photographs before deciding whether floor seating suits your group.
Korail lists nine rooms in car 5, for three to six passengers per room. Regular seats are a separate option, so an unavailable floor room does not necessarily mean every seat on the train is sold out.
The KRW 40,000 misunderstanding
KRW 40,000 is the additional room charge, not a complete ticket for everyone. Four people sharing one room divide that supplement into KRW 10,000 each, with each traveller’s train fare still to be added. Local transport, meals and a separate return booking also belong in your budget. Inspect the cost breakdown for each journey.
Could Gunsan fit into a day trip?
The published timetable checked for this guide shows departure from Yongsan at 08:28 and arrival at Gunsan at 11:35. The return leaves Gunsan at 16:19 and reaches Yongsan at 19:28. All times are Korean local time; verify operation and availability for your chosen date.
The gap in Gunsan is four hours and 44 minutes, including transfers, lunch and boarding. Start with a compact visit and a meal rather than a long list of scattered stops. Plan backward from the return train before choosing activities.
Read the autumn 2026 offer carefully
Korail announced 50% train fares on five themed tourist trains, including this one, for qualifying travel from October 1 to November 30, 2026. Sales began September 15 and may finish early. This does not establish that the separate room supplement is half price. Check the travel period, selected product and final price together.
Before opening the booking page
- Decide the date, route and passenger count.
- Choose regular seats or an ondol room.
- Check passenger fares and the room supplement separately.
- Confirm the return train and allow time for local transfers.
Standard sales normally open one month ahead at 07:00 Korean time, according to Korail’s FAQ, although special dates can differ. The official tourist-train booking page is in Korean. Overseas card support and ondol availability in English-language sales interfaces are not verified in this guide; confirm the process with Korail if an option is missing.
