Gwangju Chungjang Festival 2026: Choose a Parade Before Choosing Your Bus Stop

Gwangju’s Chungjang Festival runs from 7 to 11 October 2026, while the main Geumnam-ro 1–3 road closure starts on 4 October at 15:00. If you are visiting from another city, the event dates and the transport dates are two different planning questions.
The useful starting point is a parade you want to watch. Match its day and time to your arrival and return journey, then check an actual bus stop outside the controlled area. A saved place name in English is not enough if its stop is suspended for the festival.
1. Pick the program by its Korean date, not just its name
The organizer lists the following four parades on Geumnam-ro. These are program times, not guaranteed running times for your bus or train. Keep the date, the program name and the venue together in your note so that a timetable screenshot is still understandable later.
| Official program name | Listed time in Korea | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| W Parade | Friday 9 October, 20:00–22:00 | Check a return journey after an evening show. |
| K Parade | Saturday 10 October, 17:00–19:00 | Plan arrival before the afternoon start. |
| O Parade | Saturday 10 October, 19:00–22:00 | The two Saturday programs create a long evening if you choose both. |
| Golden Parade | Sunday 11 October, 18:00–20:00 | Compare the finish with your intercity return booking. |
Watching both Saturday parades would span the listed 17:00–22:00 period. That does not mean you must stay for five hours or that seating is guaranteed. Choose a shorter visit if the return journey or a companion’s comfort makes the longer evening impractical.

2. Keep the road name and the stop name separate
The official traffic notice closes Geumnam-ro 1–3, from Jeonil Building 245 to Geumnam-ro Park, from 4 October at 15:00 until 12 October at 06:00. Other adjoining streets have their own control periods. Do not turn that notice into a claim that every road in central Gwangju is closed for the same period.
The notice says bus stops inside controlled sections do not operate and buses detour. It does not provide a complete route-by-route replacement-stop list. Check the current transport notice for your actual route, including which side of the road and which direction you need. A normal map pin or a previous visit’s stop name cannot confirm that a festival-day boarding point is operating.
| Name to keep | What it identifies | What still needs checking |
|---|---|---|
| 금남로 / Geumnam-ro | The road and parade area | The controlled section and hours |
| 전일빌딩245 / Jeonil Building 245 | A landmark at one end of the main control section | Your actual walking approach |
| Your bus-stop name | A boarding or alighting point | Whether it operates on your visit day |
3. Write a return note that works offline
Before leaving your accommodation, write the confirmed return service, its departure place and the latest time at which you must leave the viewing area. Leave room for crowds and the walk out of the controlled streets; this article cannot supply a reliable number of minutes for an individual journey.
A useful private note is: “Program ___ / finish ___ / operating stop ___ / direction ___ / booked onward journey ___ / alternative route ___.” Keep the Korean stop or terminal name alongside its English rendering. Store any booking confirmation privately, and avoid posting personal travel details in public comments.
If you cannot confirm a late connection, change the plan before the parade. An earlier departure is a practical option; an unverified late bus should not be treated as a fallback.
Read the detailed road-control table and return worksheet (Korean)4. Questions visitors are likely to ask
Does the main road close only during the festival?
No. The listed Geumnam-ro 1–3 closure begins three days before the first festival day and ends the morning after the final festival day.
Can I use the normal stop inside the road closure?
The official notice says stops in controlled sections do not operate. Confirm a working stop for your route rather than assuming the regular one remains available.
Does a parade time confirm an admission or seat reservation?
No. The timetable identifies the program. It does not by itself establish a reserved place, seating availability or a ticket condition.
Where are the details from?
The organizer’s traffic notice, posted on 23 September, and the W, K, O and Golden program pages. Conditions can change, so check the organizer again near departure.
